Take the stress out of planning your Bayfield getaway. On the blog, you'll get the inside scoop of where to go, what to see, and what to do.
The summer is in full swing here in Bayfield. And we love hearing about all the exciting adventures our guests at the Seagull Bay are having.
Our guests are busy enjoying their time…
And shopping. Bayfield is home to one of the most darling main streets ever. It truly looks like a set straight out of a hallmark movie. Bayfield is reminiscent of a New England harbor town. So much so that the Chicago Tribune once called it “the best little town in the Midwest.” It’s a lovely view to add to a wonderful shopping day.
While shopping, do you ever get sick and tired of seeing the same home decor in the same color palette repeatedly? Or what about the great purse you just found to then see everyone else has it? Wouldn’t it be great if you could find that perfect gift that’s full of personality and tells a story?
Whether you’re strolling down Rittenhouse Avenue, Bayfield’s main street, or Manypenny Avenue, unique gift shops and specialty stores are waiting for you.
Bayfield’s a shopper’s paradise. We promise you’ll come away with one-of-kind items from local artists, a new book, a favorite piece of outdoor gear, or a fabulous pair of earrings!
Here’s a sneak peek at some new shops gracing Bayfield’s sidewalks and a few of our long-standing favorites.
Bayfield has seen an influx of new residents and entrepreneurs looking to take on a slower, more relaxing rural lifestyle. They’ve brought with them the excitement of new ideas and business adventures to Bayfield.
These new shops and storefronts are adding to Bayfield’s charming atmosphere. From artisan popcorn (coming soon) to a custom print shop.
Here’s a glimpse at a few shops you must see for yourself.
Penny Print Studio opened its doors this last spring. It’s located on Manypenny Avenue in a renovated brownstone building that once homed the Bayfield Cannery.
Penny Print Studio is a small retail shop with big ideas that’ll stir your imagination. Owners Kate and Abe Clark write that their shop is for “The ‘weirdos’ of the world that feel paint is water, color is landscape, and materials are hope.”
Their space is adorned with eye-catching items that stir your soul. Take a peek at their design library and create one-of-kind clothing through screen printing.
You’ll also find artisan goods, including Good Flower Farm Skin Care products, organic baby rompers, and fresh home decor.
Feeling inspired? Ask about educational opportunities to feed the artist in you.
Outside the shop is an interactive poster asking, “What would you like to do before you leave the earth?” Thought-provoking and interactive. This shop is an experience that’ll warm your heart.
For over 40 years, Bayfield was home to the Candy Shoppe. For many residents, nothing could replace this beloved shop: the infamous wine bread, mouth-watering cinnamon rolls, and fresh-baked pies. And let’s not forget the ice cream with homemade waffle cones and malted milk balls.
Well, there’s no use whining over wine bread. Previous owners Don and Bev definitely left a legacy that’ll be remembered for years. And some things simply can’t be replaced.
But… we think you’ll find a new place in your heart for Sweet & Salty.
Sweet & Salty is still home to the same beloved waffle cones and 31 Cedar Crest Ice Cream flavors. Saltwater taffy still lines the walls and other candy favorites. But along with the fresh decor are also some fresh sweet, salty treats waiting for you.
Sweet & Salty features:
Handmade. Clean Lines. Nordic. What could be hotter right now in fashion? Where minimalistic design meets jewelry with personality.
Lake Superior Scandinavian features handmade jewelry that’ll refreshen the classic tee and your favorite pair of blue jeans. These pieces are sure to become a staple accessory to any outfit.
Quality materials crafted just for you on “the world’s greatest unsalted sea, Lake Superior.”
Bayfield is alive with new ideas, and we can’t wait to see what you find when you’re strolling through town. But don’t forget some of the shops that have called Bayfield home for years. Shops that are worth visiting over and over again.
Joanne’s Scandinavian is a long-standing corner shop featuring high-end Scandinavian decor. You’ll also find specialty kitchen items, Dansko footwear, and Scandinavian-inspired clothing.
The Brownstone Centre and Sweet Sailing are sister shops located on Rittenhouse Ave.
At the Brownstone Centre, you’ll find women’s clothing for the outdoor enthusiast, Apostle Island-inspired home decor, and children’s gifts. It also hosts Bayfield’s largest selection of yarn for crocheting and knitting enthusiasts.
Sweet Sailing is home to men’s clothing featuring brands such as Kuhl and Stormy Kromer. Even better, Sweet Sailing will please anyone’s sweet tooth with homemade fudge. Or cool you on a hot summer day with hand-dipped ice cream. They also have specialty kitchen gadgets that’ll make your time in the kitchen even more inspiring.
Howl Downtown features clothing for the outdoor adventurer. If you’re looking for apparel that serves both fashion and function, then this is the place to go.
Dog enthusiast? Howl Downtown has a variety of gifts that’ll pamper your pup.
Howl Downtown also offers guided sailing trips in the summer months and dog sledding trips in winter.
Stone’s Throw is home to one of Bayfield’s well-known potters, Andy Falconer. Andy’s style of pottery features light and whimsical designs not found anywhere else.
Her upbeat and eclectic shop serves as a gallery for area artists. It includes sculpture, jewelry, bright home decor, and odds and ends that’ll put a smile on your face as you browse this gift shop.
Our neighbor, Eckels Pottery, is a second-generation and oldest pottery studio in Wisconsin. They’re located one block south of Seagull Bay on highway 13.
Bob Eckels and his wife Lu moved here and established “The Pot Shop,” the first of its kind in the area. From here, the Bayfield Art Community was born.
For years Eckels Pottery has been a mecca for art students from around the country. When you walk into the shop, you can watch Dede, Bob’s daughter, and others throw pots and other clay masterpieces.
Eckel’s business philosophy is to make friends and share their gifts with anyone that walks through their studio door.
