Bayfield’s First Microbrewery

Adventure Club Brewery at Howl Adventure Center recently celebrated its third year. Despite its young age, it’s owned and operated by a veteran brewer, Matthew Gerdts.

Matt’s love of sailing, pirates, and disc golf are inspirations for the adventurous beers on the Adventure Club menu. Some of the staples you’ll find on this rotating beer list are:

  • The Rusty Zipper – an amber ale
  • Brown Fedora – a brown ale with coffee
  • Ile de Madeline – a blonde ale with rose hips

Stroll along the Adventure Club fairways with a beer in hand, wind in your hair, and smile on your face. You can even pick up a game of disc golf on the fairways to add more excitement to your night. Or you can toss some bags over by the corn hole area.

This summer, Howl Adventure Center and Adventure Club are hosts of the Superior Tacos food truck. These gourmet tacos feature Lake Superior Whitefish, yams, and pork. Yum! The eclectic menu also features beef empanadas and loaded tots to round it out. You can then finish your meal with sorbet or a chocolate peanut butter tart.

Yes, Adventure Club provides a casual atmosphere, but trust us, these flavors are anything but casual. This may be one of the best pop-up restaurants this summer in Bayfield, WI.

Adventure Club is also dog and bike-friendly, so bring your four-legged best friend along for some fun. It’s where the locals go, and visitors hang out. You can lie back in one of the hammocks or relax at a picnic table. Engage in colorful conversation while sipping on one of Matt’s new creations. The Apfelcrush is sure to be one of this summer’s favorites.

Bayfield Winery and Blue Ox Cider

Bayfield Winery and Blue Ox Cider is owned by Phil and Jen, along with their two young children, Maddie and Lou, in tow.

Despite its inaugural year, Bayfield Winery and the land on which it sits is far from new. Bayfield Winery and Blue Ox Cider was born out of Betzold’s Family Orchard, established in the 1920s. This orchard was home to cherries, strawberries, and apples and is located on Bayfield’s famed “fruit loop.”

In 1995, Scott and Renate Hauser planted grape vines and created Bayfield Winery. This year they decided to hang up their pruners, so Phil and Jen snatched up the opportunity to fulfill their dream of starting a cidery.

Bayfield Winery and Blue Ox is an authentic farm-to-table drinking establishment, but that’s not all. They also host one of this summer’s hottest live music venues.

Although we forgot to mention them in our recent blog, which features live music venues in Bayfield, they’re definitely worth mentioning. Their impressive schedule features a list of talented musicians we’re sure you’ll enjoy.

Their calendar is jam-packed with solo musicians, orchestras, and comics. Whip out your favorite lawn chair or blanket as you enjoy a delicious wine or cider by the orchard listening to classical, blues, and folk music. It’s the perfect way to end your night relaxing and sipping as you listen to the soothing notes surrounding you.

Live music can be heard every weekend into September.

The Copper Crow Distillery

Be a part of history by visiting the first Native American-owned distillery in the United States.

Bayfield is host to a rich history of fur trading – its first people were Native Americans, lumber barons, and fishermen. Bayfield is known as the Gateway to the Apostle Island National Lakeshore on the shores of Lake Superior. The Copper Crow Distillery has definitely been added to this elite list.

The Copper Crow Distillery is owned and operated by Kurt and Linda Basina, members of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. They established the distillery in 2017. Since then, they have created a true Lake Superior destination.

Using local and regional ingredients, their small and handcrafted batches of whiskey, rum, vodka, and apple brandy live up to the legendary waters they call SUPERIOR. Check out this article in Midwest Living sharing Kurt and Linda’s journey in creating this historic place.

Grab a stool and slide up to the bar to enjoy one of their artisan-slung cocktails or enjoy a seat around one of the outdoor fire pits. Better yet, finish off a weekend of fun by enjoying their bloody mary bar on Sundays.

Copper Crow Distillery is also the summer home to The Lake Superior Whitefish Tacos food truck. This place truly celebrates all that Lake Superior has to offer.
