Take the stress out of planning your Bayfield getaway. On the blog, you'll get the inside scoop of where to go, what to see, and what to do.
As a family, we’re always on the lookout for new places to explore.
Whether it’s visiting a quiet beach on one of the Apostle Islands, ATVing through rugged trails in Bayfield County, or finding that *secret fishing spot* nobody knows about, we crave adventure.
For us, vacations are about discovering new places, trying something different, and making memories. They’re about finding the hidden gems—the places that aren’t listed in every travel guide—but have a way of capturing your heart.
That’s exactly how we feel about our hometown Bayfield, Wisconsin–a town off the beaten path.
As you drive north on Highway 13 and start to catch glimpses of the deep blue water of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, you instantly want to see more.
The densely wooded hills, sprawling apple orchards, and stunning views surrounding Bayfield offer endless year-round opportunities to explore–even during the cold and snowy months.
Whether you’re seeking an adrenaline rush or a peaceful stroll through nature, you’ll quickly fall in love with all Bayfield has to offer.
Bayfield is known for its breathtaking Lake Superior summer views, but it’s just as much a haven in the winter. While some might think of Bayfield as only a summer destination, the real beauty of this place unfolds when the snow starts to fall.
Winter in Bayfield brings a quiet kind of magic. It’s peaceful yet full of potential for those who can’t wait to explore the Northwoods.
When the cold weather sets in, the landscape transforms. The crisp air, the snow-covered trees, and the stillness of the forest call to all types of adventurers.
Skiing, hiking, fat biking, and even the elusive ice caves on Lake Superior become a playground for those who love the outdoors.
Whether you’re:
You’ll find that there’s no shortage of outdoor activities to immerse yourself in.
And if the conditions are right, The Apostle Islands Ice Caves offer one of the most awe-inspiring experiences you can have in Bayfield. When Lake Superior’s ice is thick enough, these magnificent caves are accessible by foot, and you’ll see some of the most surreal natural ice formations on this side of the US.
When you’re all done with your adventure for the day, retreat to your quiet, cozy room in one of our three beautiful properties at Seagull Bay. From here, you can take off your boots and shed your backpack. Your peaceful lakeside room invites you to relax and enjoy the scenery as you wind down.
The next morning, as you prep for the day’s adventures, take a moment to bask in the views of Lake Superior right from your room as you sip your morning coffee.
At Seagull Bay, we get it.
You’re here for the adventure, ready to explore and connect with nature, yourself, and the people you love the most. That’s exactly what makes our properties the perfect place to call home during your Bayfield getaway.
No matter which of our three properties you choose—Seagull Bay Motel, Bay West, or The Brownstone Cottage—you’ll have the perfect base for your next adventure and a private retreat to come back to.
Seagull Bay Motel is ideal for those who want to get up and go but want a warm and welcoming place to return to.
Situated along the shoreline of Lake Superior, Seagull Bay Lakeside Motel offers a relaxing and modern stay for those exploring the trails, shopping in Bayfield, or venturing across the ice road to Madeline Island.
Its newly remodeled rooms feature a clean, minimalistic mid-century design, stunning views, and a peaceful atmosphere. Seagull Bay is the perfect base for your next adventure, showcasing its most prized asset: wide-open views of Lake Superior.
Located right by the water, you can step out onto your balcony to watch the sunrise over Madeline Island or see ice fishermen drilling holes in the ice before heading out on the trails.
Whether you’re cross-country skiing at Mt. Ashwabay or enjoying a leisurely walk on the Brownstone Trail, Seagull Bay Motel’s location is ideal for adventure-seekers who want to experience Bayfield, Wisconsin without missing a beat.
For those looking for a bit more space with maximum privacy, Bay West is your perfect home away from home.
This property is just around the corner from the Seagull Bay Motel and has more of a moody, woodsy feel. Like the Seagull Bay Motel, it offers easy access to your next adventure and a peaceful setting where you can unwind at the end of your day.
From Bay West, you can access Bayfield’s hiking trails within minutes, go fat biking on the infamous ice road to Madeline Island, or slip on your Yaktrax and take a winter stroll around the area.
Whether with family or friends, Bay West offers plenty of room to stretch out, cook a meal together in your private full kitchen, and enjoy each other’s company.
I know this blog is boasting winter in Bayfield, Wisconsin and the adventures you can find when you stay at Seagull Bay and Bay West. But I still want to mention our third property: The Brownstone Cottage.
Although it’s closed for the winter, The Brownstone Cottage is a secluded lake house within walking distance of Bayfield’s charming downtown. Nestled among trees, this cozy home offers a peaceful forest retreat with two bedrooms, 1½ baths, and a fully equipped kitchen. It has everything you need to feel right at home from May through October.
No matter what time of year you come to explore our great Northwoods, we have a place for you. But I highly encourage you to take a chance and experience the quieter, snowier side of Bayfield.
Bayfield is the place to be if you’re looking for an adventure that allows you to connect with nature, find peace in the quiet, and make lasting memories with those you love.
Whether skiing across the snowy hills of Mt. Ashwabay, snowshoeing along scenic trails, or simply enjoying the warmth of an artisan cocktail, there’s no shortage of things to do in Bayfield, Wisconsin this winter.
