Cross-Country Ski to Nourse’s Sugar Bush Cabin on New Year’s Eve

Wake up the morning of New Year’s Eve with the light poking through your window, begging you to soak in your expansive view of Lake Superior. In the winter, there’s nothing more stunning than the deep blue water of Lake Superior against a white backdrop of snow.

We suggest easing into the morning. Take a deep breath and sit for a moment surrounded by the beauty of Lake Superior before venturing out to take part in a classic Bayfield Winter Adventure.

Mt. Ashwabay’s nordic ski trails are notorious for the beauty that surrounds you as you ski through the pines and hardwood forests of Bayfield’s hillside.

A popular destination on cross-country skies is Nourse’s Sugarbush Cabin. Here you’ll be surrounded by snow-covered trees as you glide your way back to the 1920s log cabin. The Nourse family used this rustic cabin to process sap collected from the nearby maple trees into mouth-watering syrup.

The Sugarbush trail is an easy trail groomed for both classic and skate skis. It’s ideal for a beginner skier, and its beauty will enchant even the most advanced skier. Plus, there are more advanced trails intersecting with the Sugarbush trail, making it the perfect place to start.

Need gear? Not a problem. You can rent classic and skate skis from Howl Adventure Center. It’s located one mile south of Bayfield or at the Mount Ashwabay Ski and Recreation Area across the parking lot from the cross-country ski trailhead.

And don’t worry if the Sugarbush Trail doesn’t interest you, there are 40 km of nordic ski trails to choose from.

Here are some other great places to visit.

The Northern Lights ski trail wraps its way around the perimeter of Mount Ashwabay, providing you with a variety of topography, including:

• Rolling Hills
• A climb to the summit
• Lake Superior Views
• A rewarding downhill section

And after time spent on the ski trails, there’s no better way to warm up and help relieve achy legs than spending time in the infrared sauna. Or you can enjoy a full body massage at Superior body massage and spa in downtown Bayfield.

Toast to the New Year With Spirits at Copper Crow Distillery

Warm your body from the inside out and shake off the winter chill from time spent outdoors at The Copper Crow Distillery in Red Cliff.

This sleek and modern distillery is the first Native American-owned and operated distillery in the United States.

Its owners, Curt and Linda Basina share with you the spirit of Lake Superior in their handcrafted rum, whiskey, gin, and vodka made on-site and poured into artisan cocktails.

The atmosphere couldn’t be more inviting with its rustic bar tops made from bowling lanes, copper accents, and black exterior. The whiskey barn is nestled in the pines and greets you like an old friend, inviting you inside to relax and enjoy some good company.

Eat Dinner on New Year’s Eve at Good Thyme Restaurant

Be sure to make dinner reservations at Good Thyme Restaurant in Washburn. It’s just a short 10-minute drive from Seagull bay.

Here you can enjoy a specially curated menu by owner Renee Holman. Renee has been providing the Chequamegon area with artisan, hand-made cuisine since 1999.

Offering small plates fused with unique flavor profiles or hearty entrees served with a tantalizing glass of wine. You can sit back and reflect on your day as you count down the hours to New Year’s Eve.

Wake up to a new year and a fresh perspective while taking in the Lake Superior views outside your window. Before checking out, stroll into town along the Brownstone Trail on the edge of Lake Superior.
