Spend a Classic Winter Weekend in Bayfield, Wisconsin

Snowy Days and Warm Winter Nights: Spend a Weekend in Bayfield, Wisconsin

If you’ve ever stayed with us before, you know we don’t usually sit still for long. Even when things look quiet on the surface—especially in the late fall when the lake turns steel-blue, and the town finds a peaceful hush—our little Seagull Bay team is still buzzing behind the scenes.

This year is no different.

As we slide into winter, Isaac and I have been juggling a few projects we haven’t announced quite yet, but I promise… they’re good ones. The kind that makes your stay here even easier, even cozier, even more “this is exactly what I needed.”

A few more room refreshes are underway, bringing in that modern, minimalistic style you’ve been loving. The website is getting its own glow-up, making it easier for you to plan your stay and get a feel for each property long before you pull into Bayfield.

But we’ll share all of that soon enough.

Bayfield has already had its first big snowstorm. It was the kind where you wake up, peek out the window, and see the whole landscape transformed into a winter wonderland.

Around here, the first big snowstorm always sparks something. Excitement. Energy. Childlike giddiness. It’s like the whole town switches gears and remembers, “The magic of winter.”

  • Maybe it’s the way Lake Superior steams in the morning light
  • Maybe it’s the way snow catches on the branches or the sound of boots crunching beneath you
  • Maybe it’s the joy I get watching my boys climb snowbanks and build snowforts

Or maybe it’s simply that this tiny corner of the map knows how to make cold weather feel warm.

Whatever it is, winter brings out some of the best of Bayfield, Wisconsin

And if you’ve been craving a weekend that feels both energizing and restful—where the days are full and the nights are cozy—winter is the season to put on your calendar.

Snowy Day Adventures at Mt. Ashwabay

Ask anyone around here: Mt. Ashwabay is where winter really takes off.

Just a few miles from town, Mt. Ashwabay brings together community spirit, fresh air, and the kind of winter fun that keeps people coming back year after year.

For many, weekends at Mt. Ashwabay are simply a way of life. Downhill skiers and snowboarders find their happy place, cross-country skiers settle into a peaceful rhythm on world-class Nordic trails, and fat bikers pedal toward the summit for that breathtaking view.

And in the midst of all that good energy sits one of the hill’s biggest—and most beloved—events: The Mt. Ashwabay Summit Ski race, returning for its 20th year.

This classic winter challenge brings together Nordic skiers from across the region to take on one of the most scenic and rewarding courses around.

With 15K and 30K race options for both classic and skate skiers, the course winds through snowy forest stretches, past Nourse’s Historic Sugarbush Cabin, and up the winding path to the summit.

The Summit Ski Race is the perfect mix of effort and excitement. Plus, each skier will get their own slice of the pie, literally!

Whether you’re a competitor, a casual participant, or someone who likes to cheer people on with a hot drink in hand, the atmosphere on race day is contagious. The mountain buzzes from morning to afternoon, and you get that “this is why we love winter” feeling in your bones.

The best part?

If you stay at Seagull Bay, you’re an easy 5-minute drive from the starting line. And when you’re ready to shake off the chill from the day’s events, you’ll find warmth—and a different kind of energy—at The Backstage and StageNorth just outside of town.

Warm Winter Nights at The Backstage and StageNorth

Because as much as Bayfield is an outdoor town, we’ve also got something special happening indoors too—winter (and year-round) entertainment at The Backstage and StageNorth.

Located just a minute or two from the Seagull Bay properties, The Backstage keeps the lights glowing all winter long as Big Top Chautauqua’s year-round home—a cozy, intimate venue with a full-service bar serving beer, wine, and specialty drinks.

If you’ve never been, picture warm lighting, the Blue Canvas Orchestra just a few feet away, and a room full of people leaning into the music.

From November through May, The Backstage showcases local artists, touring performers, and the kind of off-season shows that somehow feel even better when the snow is falling outside.

If you happen to be here midweek, their community Open Mic Nights are always a fun way to glimpse Bayfield’s local talent.

A few minutes more down the road in Washburn, StageNorth adds its own spark to winter nights. Born in a renovated church back in 2001 and now housed in a gorgeous modern theater overlooking Lake Superior, StageNorth has long been a beloved gathering place for comedy, theatre, music, and the arts.

Now operated by Big Top Chautauqua, the partnership has breathed even more energy into the space—fresh acts, new performances, and that feeling that something exciting is always happening on Omaha Street.

With only 150 seats and beautifully handcrafted details, StageNorth makes every show feel close, personal, and a little magical.

Together, The Backstage and StageNorth turn winter nights into something unforgettable—a perfect pairing to your snowy Bayfield days.
