Seagull Bay’s 3 Favorite Things to Do in Bayfield, Wisconsin this Summer

Every year, there’s a moment when it finally feels like Bayfield wakes up again.

Summer on Lake Superior, showing light Houses on Raspberry Island

For me, it usually happens after the quick rush of Memorial Day weekend, on an ordinary evening in June. The windows are open after a long winter. The lake breeze carries that familiar mix of lilacs and fresh-caught fish drifting up from town.

Sailboats move slowly across the bay. Guests are relaxing on the decks and balconies at our three Seagull Bay properties. And if we’re lucky, live music is floating through the air somewhere nearby.

That’s when I remember why summer in Bayfield, Wisconsin, feels different.

Not rushed. Not overplanned. Just full of simple moments that somehow stick with you long after vacation ends.

Over the years, guests have asked Isaac and me the same question again and again:
“What should we do while we’re here?”

Truthfully, there are a hundred things to do in Bayfield, Wisconsin.

You could kayak the sea caves, hike the Big Ravine Trail, spend the day at Bayview Beach, or wander in and out of little shops downtown with an ice cream cone in hand.

But if someone asked me to narrow it down to three summer experiences that feel authentically Bayfield, I think these would be it.

So if you’re planning a stay with us at Seagull Bay this summer, we encourage you to leave room on your itinerary for these three things.

1. Take the Apostle Islands Cruises Grand Tour

Even though I’ve lived here for almost a decade, the Apostle Islands still stop me in my tracks.

There are mornings when I’m driving into town, and the lake looks completely different from the way it did the day before. Some days it’s steel blue and moody. Other days, it’s calm enough to reflect the sky. And every once in a while, you catch that clear summer light where you look over Madeline Island and see the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the Porcupine Mountains.

It never gets old.

One of the best ways to experience the islands, especially if it’s your first time visiting Bayfield, is the Apostle Islands Cruises Grand Tour.

We recommend it to guests all the time because it gives you a little bit of everything:

  • Historic lighthouses
  • Sea caves
  • Forest-covered islands
  • Big open-water views
  • Stories about the area’s history
People overlooking the sights on a boat with an American flag blowing in the wind

The cruise lasts about three hours, which somehow feels both long and not long enough once you’re out there.

Guests enjoy taking photos of our beautiful landscape, kids like pointing out every lighthouse, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a black bear walking along the shoreline or an eagle scanning the water’s surface looking for a fresh catch.

There’s something about being out on the water that changes your pace a little. Phones get put down. Conversations slow. People settle into the experience instead of rushing toward the next thing.

That’s why we love recommending the Grand Tour to Seagull Bay guests. It gives you a chance to experience the scale and beauty of this area in a way you can’t from shore.

A few tips if you plan to go:

  • Bring layers. Even hot summer days can feel cool out on Lake Superior
  • Book ahead if you’re visiting during peak summer weekends
  • Grab seats on the upper deck for the best viewing

The fresh lake air alone is worth it.

Afterward, there’s a good chance you’ll come back wanting more to explore. That’s usually how it starts around here, and there’s no better place than Bayfield’s Fruit Farms.

2. Spend an Afternoon Touring Bayfield’s Fruit Farms & Orchards

One thing people don’t always expect about Bayfield is how tied this area is to fruit farming.

But once summer rolls around, the orchards become part of everyday life here.

  • Strawberry picking starts at the end of June
  • Sweet cherry picking is usually in July
  • Raspberries and Blueberries soon follow
  • Apple, plums, and pears are enjoyed in the fall

And a simple drive around the Bayfield Fruit Loop can be one of the best parts of the trip, touring multiple orchards in a small area.

The orchards around Bayfield are beautiful any time of year, but summer has its own kind of charm. The rolling hills overlooking Lake Superior stay incredibly green, and the slower pace out there feels worlds away from everyday life.

Guests can easily head out with no real agenda besides grabbing a pie, picking fresh berries, or letting the kids run around for a while.

And honestly, those are usually the best afternoons.

If you’re visiting in the summer, spending time at one of the orchards gives you a completely different feel for Bayfield than downtown does. You get the open countryside, expansive lake views from the hill tops, and a glimpse into the rich farming history and the families who’ve shaped this area long before tourism became part of the story.

A few things worth doing while you’re out there:

  • Stop at Erickson Orchards for fresh cider donuts
  • Pick up locally made Apple Butter at Bayfield Apple Company
  • Enjoy Apfelhaus Cider at Hauser’s Superior View Farm
  • Sip a glass of wine and listen to live music at Bayfield Winery and Blue Ox Cider

Some of our guests’ favorite Bayfield memories have happened on slow orchard drives where nobody was looking at the clock–you’re on Bayfield time now.

3. Fish and Chips + Live Music at Hoop’s Dockside

There’s something about ending a summer day at Hoop’s Dockside that just feels right.

  • Maybe it’s sitting on the dock near the water
  • Maybe it’s the baskets of fresh whitefish and chips wrapped in paper
  • Maybe it’s the way you can’t help but tap your feet to the live music being played

If you’ve never been, Hoop’s Dockside sits at the end of a fishing pier in the Bayfield harbor. It’s casual, relaxed, and exactly the kind of place you hope to stumble into during a harbor town vacation.

Guests often head there after a day of exploring the Apostle Islands or touring the orchards.

Some go for lunch. Some stay until sunset. Some accidentally turn “a quick dinner” into a whole evening because the music starts, another drink gets ordered, and nobody feels like leaving yet.

And honestly? That’s the magic of Bayfield, Wisconsin, in the summer.

Guests often share how they love to sit right on the water, watch the sky turn pink as the sun starts to drop lower in the sky, and listen to some of their favorite songs being played.

In many ways, it’s the simplicity of the menu, natural surroundings, and a classic tune that leaves a lasting impression.

That’s what places like Hoop’s do well. They create the kind of atmosphere where summer memories happen naturally.

If you go, you should know there’s only fish on the menu. The whitefish in your basket was caught that morning and is only available until they run out—so get there sooner rather than later. Check their website to find out when live music is happening.

You don’t need a packed itinerary here in Bayfield to have a meaningful trip. Let our natural landscape, rich heritage, and local menus do the work for you 😉.

Plan Your Summer Getaway to Bayfield, Wisconsin

One of the things I love most about summer in Bayfield is that every trip ends up looking a little different.

Some people spend every possible minute outside hiking, biking, kayaking, and exploring the islands. Others come here because they need rest. A slower pace. A weekend where nobody’s overscheduled.

Most people end up finding a little bit of both.

That’s part of what we hope Seagull Bay can be for you: A comfortable home base while you experience this little corner of Lake Superior.

  • Maybe your perfect summer day looks like coffee on the balcony before heading out on the Apostle Islands Cruises Grand Tour
  • Maybe it’s a slow morning followed by a drive around the Bayfield Fruit Loop
  • Maybe it’s fish and chips at Hoop’s Dockside after a day of sailing or kayaking

However you spend your time here, we’d love to be part of your Bayfield story.

Whether you stay at:

  • Our Lakeside Motel above the Lake Superior shoreline
  • The Outbounder tucked beside the Brownstone Trail
  • The Brownstone Cottage for a little extra privacy and space
  • The Mill House in the heart of downtown Bayfield

We hope your trip leaves you feeling rested, connected, and already thinking about the next time you’ll come back.

Summer in Bayfield, Wisconsin, fills up quickly, so if Bayfield has been calling your name, this might be your sign to start planning.
