Cornucopia, WI – Plan a Day-Long Adventure Visiting Waterfalls and More
Who doesn’t love a good day trip?
My husband and I like to take the boys and get out of Bayfield for the day. It’s fun to explore other towns on the Bayfield peninsula and enjoy their unique experiences.
Hi, we’re Isaac and Mollie, and last year we shared an itinerary of a day trip to Madeline Island. This week we’re highlighting another fantastic day trip for you to explore during your stay at Seagull Bay: A day trip to Cornucopia, WI.
Cornucopia, or “Corny,” is the perfect place for hikers, water sports enthusiasts, and foodies looking to sample the local fare.
Cornucopia is the northernmost town in Wisconsin. It’s also the western gateway to the popular Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This old fishing village sits on the south shore of Lake Superior. It reminds us of the 90s TV show Northern Exposure – its business district spans only two blocks.
Here you’ll find natural wonders, whispers of the past, and tasteful eats. Despite its small size, incredible adventures are waiting for you.

How to Get To Cornucopia, WI.
Corny is an easy and scenic 30-minute drive from Seagull Bay. There are two main routes.
- Head north on Highway 13 following Lake Superior’s shoreline.
- Head south toward Washburn and take a right onto County Trunk C – driving through Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.
Each route is about the same distance. But each offers you a different landscape.
If traveling south, you must stop at Coco in Washburn. This cafe has all the delicious things you need to fuel you up before venturing into the heart of Cornucopia, WI, including:
- Artisan pastries
- Local ingredients
- Mouth-watering breakfast sandwiches
County C is a right turn three short blocks from Coco. As you travel through the national forest, the first stop you need to make is at Lost Creek Falls, five miles south of Corny.
Go Chase Some Waterfalls
Cornucopia, WI is home to two waterfalls that feed directly into Lake Superior – Lost Creek Falls and Siskiwit Falls.
Lost Creek Falls
Lost Creek Falls is a three-mile out-and-back trail that leads to a secluded waterfall. The trail is well-marked and kid-friendly.
Cool off at the waterfall or climb behind it and watch the curtain of water rain down. Take some time to dip your toes in its shallow creek or bask in the sunlight that weaves between the trees. There’s a stunning spot right in front of the waterfall for a selfie (or 10).
Siskiwit Falls
Siskiwit Falls has been a local gem for generations.
The not-so-best-kept secret of these falls is that they make the best natural waterslide. Don’t be surprised to see kids and adults sliding down the falls. A piece of advice – bring an inflatable, a cushion, or at the very least, wear a pair of shorts when sliding over the sandstone slabs.
Bayfield County recently purchased 100 acres surrounding the falls and has plans to establish a primitive trail system. Currently, a parking area and a small group of trails follow the creek bed and run along the falls.

Where to Eat In Cornucopia, WI.
One of the definitions of cornucopia is “an abundant supply of good things.” The food in this quaint little town definitely lives up to its name.
Cornucopia Coffee and Sweet Shoppe
The Cornucopia Coffee and Sweet Shoppe is a one-of-a-kind stop.
This little shop may be small but big in personality and events. Not only can you get coffee and ice cream, but you can enjoy a Thursday night dinner, farmer’s market, and local music.
Check out their outdoor movie schedule and grab a blanket. Or relax in one of their large inflatables and watch a cinema classic.
Ehler’s General Store
Historic Ehlers General Store is truly a general store. You can buy:
- Groceries
- That pipe fitting you’ve been looking for
- A Cornucopia sweatshirt
- Takeout for a beach picnic from their deli
- Many other random and valuable finds
Wander around and see what you find. It’s like a treasure hunt for every person! Many locals say, “You may not find what you want, but you WILL find what you need,” at Elher’s Store in Cornucopia, WI.
Fisherman’s Hideout
Fisherman’s Hideout by Halvorson’s Fisheries is home to the freshest fish you’ll ever eat.
Here you can enjoy fresh fish straight out of Lake Superior for lunch or dinner.
If you’re eager to taste some of Lake Superior’s bounty, this is the perfect place for you.
Sunbathing at Corny Beach
Corny Beach is a beautiful sandy beach alongside the Cornucopia marina in Siskiwit Bay – less than a mile from Cornucopia’s main street.
This shallow beach is ideal for kids to swim, share a picnic, or play on the nearby playground. Lay down your towel, fill up your water bottle at the artisan well, and take a nap listening to waves lap onto the shore.
You can watch Halvorson’s fishing boats come in with the day’s catch from the beach. Or you can rent a paddle board from Lost Creek Adventures and glide along the shore.
The sunsets at Corny Beach are magical. Here you can watch the blue clouds transform into cotton candy skies.
