3 Easy Ways to See the Fall Colors in Bayfield, Wisconsin & the Apostle Islands

Does anyone else feel like life is happening too fast?

My boys started school on August 21st, and for me, nothing signals the end of summer more than the start of the school year.

As early as it seems, I’m always surprised to see the fall colors in Bayfield, Wisconsin, and the Apostle Islands show up by mid-August.

At first, it’s just a few hints of orange, red, and yellow peeking through the branches of the poplar and maple trees—a gentle reminder that a new season is on its way.

September and October are two of the most beautiful months we have here in Northern Wisconsin, with the fall colors peaking toward the end of September and early October.

  • Sunny days with low humidity
  • Blue skies with big fluffy white clouds
  • Maple and oak trees stand with fiery colors

Bayfield, Wisconsin, Lake Superior, and the Apostle Islands shine brighter than ever among the fall colors, offering breathtaking views you’ll want to see for yourself. And honestly, there’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly fallen leaves.

This month’s blog shares three unique ways to experience the fall colors when you visit us at Seagull Bay.

1. Take the Apostle Islands Grand Tour

When the seasons change faster than you can keep up with, and you want to take it all in, there’s no better way than the Apostle Islands Grand Tour.

Picture yourself on the top deck of the Archipelago, cruising along the calm waters of Lake Superior. The Apostle Islands provide a gorgeous backdrop of vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows – perfect for those fall Instagram pics!

This 55-mile scenic cruise isn’t just a ride, it’s a peaceful journey past the historic Raspberry and Devils Island Lighthouses. You can marvel at the towering rocks and explore the picturesque sea caves shaped by wind and waves.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife, too. A bald eagle soaring over the water looking for its next catch, a black bear swimming across the bay, or a whitetail deer getting a cool drink of water on the shoreline.

Along the way, you’ll hear stories about the rich history of these majestic islands—tales of pirates, lighthouse keepers, and Native Americans.

This tour is all about slowing down, breathing in the crisp fall air, and enjoying the unmatched beauty of Lake Superior’s “Crown Jewels.”

But this is just one way you can see the fall colors. Hiking the Bayfield Area Trails is my favorite way to enjoy this fall season.

2. Hike the Trails and See the Fall Colors in Bayfield, Wisconsin

If you’re looking to really soak in Bayfield’s fall colors, hit the local hiking trails.

Just steps from Seagull Bay, the Brownstone Trail offers a relaxed stroll along an old railroad grade with beautiful views of Lake Superior.

It’s a flat and easy path where you can enjoy the bright colors of autumn with the serene lake on one side and the vibrant leaves on the other. Plus, this trail leads you right into Bayfield, so you can park your car and explore the town on foot. You won’t need to drive again until it’s time to head home.

For a bit more adventure, the Big Ravine Trail fills your explorer’s soul. This trail follows a small creek that winds its way through lush forests bursting with fall colors.

As you hike, you’ll walk under Bayfield, Wisconsin’s historic iron bridge, past a gentle brownstone waterfall, and scale some steeper climbs along the ravine. You’ll be surrounded by towering white pines and Northern Wisconsin hardwoods decorated in their autumn best.

Last but not least, if you’re up for a short drive, the Meyers Beach Trail is worth the trip.

This trail hugs the Lake Superior shoreline, offering stunning views of the Apostle Islands sea caves, a 100’ crevasse, and vivid fall foliage. The mix of blue water and fiery leaves is something you can’t miss.

Each trail gives you a unique way to enjoy the season, making your fall visit to Bayfield feel extra special.

And, of course, I can’t talk about fall without mentioning Bayfield’s Apple Orchards

3. Tour the Apple Orchards in Bayfield, Wisconsin

Autumn in Bayfield isn’t complete without a visit to one of our many orchards. Pick your own apples, sip on fresh cider, and enjoy the crisp fall air.

The orchards here are something special. Walk through rows of apple trees stretching against the backdrop of the brilliant fall colors in Bayfield and the Apostle Islands.

As you wander through the orchards, you’ll find a variety of apples ripe for the picking, from sweet Honeycrisps to tart Cortlands.

Many of the orchards also offer homemade goodies like apple pies, caramel apples, and cider donuts that are the perfect fall treat.

Whether you’re gathering apples to take home or just enjoying the scenery, the orchards provide a peaceful and delicious way to spend a fall afternoon.

Plus, you’ll experience the rich flavors and colors of Bayfield’s harvest season firsthand. A trip to the orchards is the perfect way to round out your fall visit, making it even more memorable and oh-so sweet.
