Take the stress out of planning your Bayfield getaway. On the blog, you'll get the inside scoop of where to go, what to see, and what to do.
You’re waking up to the warmth of the sunlight peeking through the window of your room at Seagull Bay.
The sun’s light is shimmering off the frozen waters of Lake Superior.
The sky above your view of Madeline Island is like a watercolor picture with strokes of orange and pink.
The snow sparkles as if somebody has carefully sprinkled glitter on top of it.
You dig through your bag and grab your warmest clothes:
You’re about to do something you’ve never done before — dog sledding.
As you make your way to your car, the snow squeaks under your boots. Your excitement grows as you sit in your car waiting for it to warm up.
Before venturing to Wolfsong, you drive 2 minutes into town and stop at the Wonderstate Cafe. As you open the door, the smell of fresh-brewed coffee helps to wake you up.
You order your favorite drink and bite into a delicious homemade pastry. The sunshine fills the cafe as your anticipation builds for your upcoming adventure.
You drive west towards the edge of the Bayfield Township. You can’t help but marvel at the beautiful winter scenery surrounding you.
The Bayfield winter scenery truly looks like a picture out of a magazine. After a 15-minute drive winding your way through the forests of Bayfield County and snow-covered roads, you turn into the drive of Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing.
Since 1997 Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing has provided dog sledding tours in Northern Bayfield County near Bayfield, Wisconsin.
Wolfsong provides a genuinely unique and hands-on experience. Don’t expect to be a passive participant tucked in cozy in the front of a dog sled as you glide through the Bayfield County forests. Although this may be a part of your dog sledding adventure, the dogs prefer you get up close and personal.
Wolfsong’s 40 Siberian Huskies are a friendly bunch and are eager to meet you. Your dog sledding experience will begin by getting to know the dogs and learning how to harness the dogs to the sleds.
With the ability to include six sleds during your dog sledding tour, the Wolfsong guides can accommodate up to 6 people. And all tours begin and end at the Wolfsong kennel.
Wolfsong’s guides will carry passengers on the trail through the hilly terrain of Bayfield County’s pine and hardwood forests. But for those willing, our guides also provide instructions to allow you to drive your own sled and personal team of dogs.
Picture yourself standing on the runners on the back of your wooden sled. You glide smoothly through snow-covered trails, bright sunshine, the cold breeze hitting your face, and one of the biggest smiles you’ve ever had.
You’ll follow the Wolfsong guides through the forest leading you and your team of dogs on a one-of-a-kind adventure.
You can stop trailside to enjoy a hot and hearty lunch. You’ll also enjoy time with the dogs, petting and nuzzling them, thanking them for leading you on this exhilarating journey before winding your way back to the kennel.
At the end of your dog sledding tour, you’ll:
Are you ready to participate in one of Wisconsin’s best winter activities?
All dog sledding tours at Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing average around 3 hours. The amount of time spent on the trail is the same whether your group includes two people or six.
The amount of time needed to prepare for your trip depends on your group size. If you only need to utilize two sleds, the time needed to get the dogs ready and harness them, along with handling instructions, takes less time than harnessing all six sleds.
Whether you book a dog sledding tour in the morning, afternoon, or sunset, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. The tours offered by Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing include:
Wolfsong is able to accommodate children and adults in their dog sledding tours. Children 12 and under will remain passengers tucked into the front of the dog sled driven by one of the Wolfsong guides. Children and adults 13 and older may learn how to handle the dogs and drive a dog sled on the trail if they wish. Larger groups may take turns driving dog sleds or riding as a passenger.
Wolfsong Adventures of Mushing offers dog sledding tours Friday through Monday starting in December through March as conditions allow.
