The Best Time to Visit Bayfield, WI – Here’s What You Need To Know

The calendar claims it’s summer, but when you live on the edge of Lake Superior you know that summer is fading fast. Our boys Axel and Ridge are about to start school. The beach days are limited and the first hint of the fall colors are starting to show.

At Seagull Bay, we are experiencing a change in staff. The high school and college kids are returning to school and the fast pace of the last couple of months is slowing.

There’s less humidity in the air which means the views are getting clearer and more vibrant. And the night sky is worth swooning over as the Milky Way shines brighter.

The best time to visit Bayfield is without a doubt the fall. The months of September, October, and even November are incredible.

This week we’re highlighting activities and events that are an absolute must when visiting Bayfield in the fall.

Bayfield in the Fall Is Magical

Picture this – 19th-century buildings and victorian mansions lining a Lake Superior harbor town that draws your eye right to the big lake.

The rolling hills and Apostle Islands are laced with hardwoods that have turned shades of yellows, oranges, and reds. The perfect contrast to the deep blue Lake Superior water. Here you can see nature’s color wheel firsthand.

September lends itself to Bayfield’s best weather of the calendar year. Cool nights and warm days may it ideal for outdoor activities.

October brings on Bayfield’s most notable event, the Bayfield Apple Festival.

And November is the ultimate time to enjoy a relaxing vacation in Bayfield. This is the time that Bayfield is able to take a breath from its busy tourist season.

This is the time of year when Bayfield will truly enter your heart and soul. Here’s why.

The Fall Colors in Bayfield, WI.

The fall colors usually peak around the second week in October. The trees of Bayfield and the Apostle Islands produce a color show that’ll take your breath away. Shades of reds, oranges, and yellows set a stunning background against the waters of Lake Superior.

This is the time of year when an Apostle Islands Cruise, a hike above the sea caves, or reading your favorite book on your balcony is the ultimate vacation.

Things to Do in the Fall in Bayfield, WI.

Isaac and I want you to experience a vacation filled with Bayfield’s best. One that will stir your imagination and restore your soul. There are so many things to do when visiting Bayfield. We’ve compiled 5 activities that will stimulate all your senses.

Apostle Islands Cruises “Grand Tour”

The grand tour is a 55-mile non-stop tour of the Apostle Islands. On this tour, you will:

  • Glide past the historic lighthouses on Devils and Raspberry Islands.
  • View majestic sea caves and sandstone cliffs.
  • See uninterrupted fall colors and natural scenery.

And learn the rich history of the people who have lived here for generations and made a living amongst the islands.

Hike and Bike the Trails of Bayfield County

Get up close and personal with nature. Bayfield and the surrounding area are home to some of the best hiking and biking trails in Northern WI. Here you can hike along the Lake Superior shoreline on the Meyer’s Beach Hiking Trail. Or wind your way back to Lost Creek Falls or hike the Big Ravine Trail starting in downtown Bayfield.

Looking for something a little more adventurous? Then you have to mountain bike the CAMBA trails, Mount Ashwabay Cluster. These single-track mountain bike trails are incredible – flow, technical, and epic downhills that will get your adrenaline pumping.

Bayfield Apple Festival

Apples, apples, and more apples.

Bayfield is home to the Bayfield Apple Festival, named “Wisconsin’s Best Festivals,” by Wisconsin Trails Magazine.

This year’s festival marks the 60th year of this time-honored tradition. A celebration of Bayfield’s rich farming history and the family-owned farms that have put Bayfield on the map.

What’s the best part of the Bayfield Apple Festival? The food of course! Sip cider, gobble down an apple brat, or dip Erickson’s famous apple cider doughnuts in your morning coffee.

Enjoy apple picking and hay rides at Hauser’s Superior View Farm. Or shop at the many gift shops and artisan booths right in town. Live music drifts through the streets of Bayfield as your walk about in your favorite fall sweater.

Big Tap at Big Top Chautauqua

Saturday, October 1st Big Top Chautauqua celebrates its 10th annual Big Tap ChautauquaFest.

This adult-only event features a sampling of local microbrews, the area’s best local cuisine, and live music.

Here you can sit back and relax for an afternoon tasting, listening, and enjoying the fresh air under the big blue tent.

Seagull Bay is one of the stops for the Big Top shuttle making it even easier when traveling to and from this one-of-a-kind event.

Get Lost in Your Favorite Book

Isaac and I love reading. Nowadays it’s hard to find time between raising our 3 boys and the motel. But when I think of a relaxing vacation my mind immediately wanders to a book I can get lost in, a cozy chair, and my favorite hot beverage.

Bayfield is home to 2 amazing book stores that are sure to inspire any bookworm. Apostle Island Booksellers and Honest Dog Books are each full of personality and have friendly staff to help you find just what you’re looking for.
