Take the stress out of planning your Bayfield getaway. On the blog, you'll get the inside scoop of where to go, what to see, and what to do.

About a month ago, I was picking up the boys from swim team practice. As I waited for them to come out of the locker room, the lobby at the rec center buzzed with talk of the Northern Lights.
Here in Bayfield, Wisconsin, we occasionally get the chance to witness pink, green, blue, and purple lights dancing across the night sky—usually in the early morning hours, when most of us are sleeping. More often than not, I’ll see photos of the aurora while scrolling Facebook or Instagram the day after it’s happened.
But this night was different.
The Northern Lights were predicted to begin before bedtime. And as the boys and I stepped out the rec center doors, I could already see faint pink hues emerging in the sky.
Now, I’m usually a stickler about bedtime. But as we climbed Manypenny Avenue, the colors grew brighter. Waves of light began to form and shape-shift overhead.
Instead of heading straight home, I turned onto Washington Avenue and drove out of town. As we climbed the Bayfield hills, the sky grew darker. I took a right onto North County Road J and pulled over at the top of the hill near Hauser’s Superior View Farm.
There, on a cold December night, the boys and I stared through the windshield as ribbons of light danced across the sky.
Ridge was the most excited—shouting and pointing as each new color appeared. Ever since, he’s asked to see the Northern Lights as if they’re something we can catch on any given night.
While the aurora itself is less common, the winter night sky here is something you can marvel at regularly. Whether I’m glancing upward for a few moments while picking the boys up from practice or snowshoeing across the golf course at night, the sky above Bayfield never fails to stop me in my tracks.
And I’m clearly not the only one who feels this way.

For the first time, Bayfield is celebrating our winter night sky with a nine-day event called Dark Sky, Star Bright, taking place January 17–25. The event is an invitation to slow down, look up, and experience winter on Lake Superior in a new way.
Pairing this festival—or any winter event—with a stay at Seagull Bay isn’t just a getaway. It’s a chance to reconnect with nature, with yourself, and with the quiet wonder that comes from noticing what’s above you.
Bayfield sits in a unique geographic sweet spot. Perched on the shores of Lake Superior and far from the light pollution of major cities, our night sky is among the darkest and most pristine in the Midwest. On a clear night, you’ll see more stars, constellations, and celestial movement than most people in the lower 48.
We live in a world where light pollution has washed out the Milky Way for nearly a third of humanity. But here, in this corner of northern Wisconsin, you can still look up into deep, dark skies—where shooting stars streak overhead and planets shine bright against a velvety backdrop.
Even if you don’t consider yourself a “sky watcher,” there’s something meditative about leaving a warm space, stepping into the cold, and tilting your head upward as billions of stars shine like diamonds.
To help protect that experience, the Apostle Islands Starry Skies Initiative launched in 2024 with a mission to preserve the beauty and wonder of our night sky throughout the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and surrounding communities. It’s this initiative inspiring Bayfield’s first-ever Dark Sky, Star Bright festival.

From January 17–25, Bayfield’s Dark Sky, Star Bright festival invites visitors and locals alike to slow down and look up. Unlike many winter festivals that pack activities into tight schedules, this nine-day celebration is intentionally unhurried—a thoughtful blend of science, art, mindfulness, and nature designed to reconnect us with the cosmos.
Instead of programming that feels like a checklist, Dark Sky, Star Bright encourages you to choose your own rhythm:
There’s no “right” way to experience it—just a wide horizon of possibilities and a gentle invitation to explore.
While Dark Sky, Star Bright may be right around the corner, winter in Bayfield offers quiet joys and unexpected adventures well into March.
Our world-class Nordic trails at Mt. Ashwabay are in a category all their own. With 40 kilometers of well-groomed trails winding through Bayfield County and State forests, you’ll ski beneath snow-covered branches, pass historic Nourse’s Sugarbush Cabin, and ascend to views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands.
Nearby hiking trails also provide prime snowshoeing, including the Brownstone Trail, just a few Yaktrax steps from your room at Seagull Bay. From wooded paths of the Big Ravine Trail or a frozen waterfall at the end of the Lost Creek Falls Trail, these trails turn a daytime outing into something special.
Winter nights in Bayfield shine indoors, too. Just minutes from Seagull Bay, The Backstage and StageNorth, both operated by the Ashwabay Alliance, keep the season lively with intimate live music, theater, comedy, and community favorites that make cold nights feel warm and cozy.
And if you’re lucky—whether you’re out on the trail or simply walking across the parking lot—you might catch a whisper of the aurora. Soft green and violet hues swirl quietly above, an unforgettable companion to your winter getaway.

This is where your Bayfield winter getaway comes together.
At Seagull Bay, mornings begin gently—with peaceful views of Lake Superior and a hot cup of coffee in hand. It’s an easy place to read an extra chapter or step outside for a crisp morning walk along the Lake Superior shoreline of the Brownstone Trail.
Our rooms are designed for comfort and calm, with clean, modern spaces, cozy beds, and windows that invite the outdoors in. Whether you’re watching snow drift past or the lake stretch endlessly toward the Apostle Islands, there’s a sense of space here inviting you to slow down.
After a day spent skiing at Mt. Ashwabay, snowshoeing nearby trails, or attending a Dark Sky, Star Bright event, returning to Seagull Bay becomes part of the ritual. Settle in, warm up, and watch the sunset melt over the peninsula. As darkness deepens, bundle up, and step back outside—ready for another night under the stars.
It’s a rhythm of quiet mornings, full winter days, and reflective evenings. The same spirit Dark Sky, Star Bright celebrates.
