I can’t get enough of the view.
And I’m not just talking about the view of Lake Superior.
I’m talking about the view inside The Guesthouse at Seagull Bay – our latest remodeling project.
As soon as you walk through the doors of The Guesthouse, a sense of space and openness immediately invites you in. It just might be my “new” favorite place to stay in Bayfield, WI. 😉
I’m Mollie, co-owner of Seagull Bay – A Lakeside Motel in Bayfield, Wl. This past spring, my husband (Isaac) and I have been working hard redesigning the interior of one of the oldest buildings on our motel property.
But those 16-hour work days are long gone! This week, we’re thrilled to share all the details and pictures of what we’ve been up to.
The Guesthouse at Seagull Bay Gets a Fresh Look
I’ll start by saying the decision to remodel The Guesthouse and Rooms One and Two is all my fault. I say this because I thought remodeling three rooms would be easier than remodeling all the rooms in the main building.
But like most remodeling projects, we ran into the unexpected. What we thought would take two months and be ready by the end of April was finished just in time for Memorial Day weekend.
During the remodel, we discovered:
- Old wiring
- Bad insulation
- Fire damage
- Bowed ceilings
- Crooked walls
Cecilia, one of the previous owners, shared that there used to be a second story that was removed long before we were even born.
Although construction took longer than expected, we couldn’t be happier with the results.
We changed the layout to maximize unused space and now have three freshly remodeled rooms to offer when you’re looking for the best place to stay in Bayfield, WI.
Each room is a little different, but all three are designed to welcome you into a relaxing space with a gentle nod toward Bayfield’s coastal charm.
A Place to Stay in Bayfield, WI. Designed to Help You Relax
Step inside any of the three freshly remodeled rooms at Seagull Bay and you’ll be greeted by an all-white interior. Each room draws you into its clean and open space. These rooms immediately allow you to take a deep breath and feel at ease.
All three rooms are anchored with king-sized beds and fluffy white linens. Large, sandy-colored accent pillows decorate the head of the beds. Textured blankets are folded in the corners and throw rugs add warmth to each room.

“The atmosphere at Seagull Bay will immerse you into a spa-like feeling as you climb into the soft sheets and admire the newly remodeled motel and the scenic overview of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands! The locals treat you like family and the owners of this motel guide you through a treasured experience in Bayfield! This motel is a must for me each time I visit.” – Betsy C.
This is exactly the vibe you get when you walk into these three rooms!
Although we chose an all-white interior, the warm wood tones of the flooring and mid-century style furniture help create a cozy atmosphere you can’t wait to snuggle into.
Classic black light fixtures stand out against the white paneled walls and offer the perfect light for reading a good book. Brass fixtures and globe lighting throughout the three rooms elevate each space.
You can still find standard, comfort-boosting amenities like:
- Flat-screen TVs
- High-speed Wi-Fi
- New appliances
- Air-conditioning
The minimalistic mid-century design of each room has been thoughtfully curated to help you relax and recharge. It’s the perfect place to stay in Bayfield, WI for a quiet getaway. And each room has something unique you won’t find in the other.
The Guesthouse
I’ve seriously considered moving into The Guesthouse. Perfect for a family of four, its airy interior is not only inviting but flawlessly frames your Lake Superior view from the highest point on our motel property.
Here, it’s not hard to imagine sitting at the counter, sipping your coffee, and looking out the south-facing windows spanning the entire room.
A small sitting area features a leather sofa sleeper and two accent chairs. Its light beige, textured fabric invites you in to get lost in late-night conversation.
Let’s not forget your private deck overlooking the Seagull Bay Property and the South Channel of Chequamegon Bay. It’s the best place to watch the sun rise over Madeline Island or share a gin and tonic.
Room One
This room is brand-spankin’ new at Seagull Bay. When we gutted this building, we quickly realized we could do MORE with this space. With some rearranging, we were able to add an additional king room.
This cozy space is filled with all the charm of the other two rooms. And it has my absolute favorite part of the whole remodel: a cement Bulgarian sink I found on Etsy. It fits perfectly in the corner of the bathroom.
Brass fixtures, globe lights, and retro blue appliances fill this space, giving it just the right vibe.
Room Two
Located on the west side of the building, Room Two resembles a traditional king motel room but with the minimal, mid-century modern design that is a common thread throughout our properties.
Next to the king-size bed is a cushy sitting area. Adorned with a round table and ivory boucle armchairs, this space overlooks your private deck with a beautiful view of Lake Superior. It’s the perfect place to watch the sun rise over Madeline Island.
